3D Systems is a leading provider of 3-D Modeling, Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing solutions. 3D recently relocated its global headquarters from California into a new state-of-the art facility in Rock Hill, SC.
As 3D began the process of selecting a manufacturer and vendor for its IT infrastructure, it became apparent that they had several business requirements that needed to be met:

2) The vendor needed to have the highest quality products and impeccable service, as their business model requires full time access to data and voice applications, regardless of physical location.
3) The solution needed to be supported by local engineers both at 3D and the vendor, to ensure fast response to emergency situations.
3D systems decided to implement a fully redundant Cisco IP Communications System and Cisco wireless system, to ensure interoperability and smooth transitioning between voice and data requirements. In addition, Adaptive Security Appliances (ASA) were used to connect offices via a VPN both quickly and securely.
PNC was selected to design and install the equipment as well as provide ongoing support for the life of the solution. “PNC made 3D systems a high priority project, as their business requirements made it clear that no mistakes were going to be tolerated during the deployment and transition process. 3D employees were in a state of flux, some moving here from California and some working from laptops sitting on top of folding tables in a temporary facility during the transition. These people needed a solid solution, and they needed it in a very timely manner,” says Jeff Gaura, Geek of the Week.
During the installation, PNC was asked to take on additional tasks that were not in the original scope of work. The engineers were able to rearrange their schedules, complete those extra tasks and still deliver an on schedule implementation. PNC and 3D’s IT department worked together to get the network and key voice and wireless applications up and running prior to occupation of the facility. PNC worked late evenings and over the weekend to ensure that the tasks were completed in a satisfactory manner.
The story does not end here; PNC continues to assist 3D, who has now set focus on relocating their data center from the west coast, to the east.
